For the last five years, I have served as Auditor of McHenry County, rooting out waste, fraud and abuse, and tackling corruption across all levels of government. For too long the Madigan Machine and special interests have run state government in Illinois. Not anymore. Not when I'm Comptroller. The hardworking taxpayers of Illinois will be in charge, not the corrupt career politicians

- Shannon Teresi

Shannon worked her way through McHenry County College with the assistance of a Presidential Talent Scholarship and served as the Financial Officer for her Student Government. She later transferred to Northern Illinois University where she received her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Accounting.

She became a certified public accountant (CPA) and began her career working in Chicago at PricewaterhouseCoopers, a ‘Big 4’ accounting firm, developing professional auditing and financial experience and working with Fortune 500 companies. Shannon learned how the most successful companies in the world operate their businesses efficiently and effectively.

Inspired to serve her community, Shannon transitioned to a career in public service at the McHenry County Auditor’s Office, where she has worked for the last 12 years. In 2018, she was appointed to serve as McHenry County Auditor and has subsequently been elected by the voters twice, most recently in 2020 where she received nearly 75% of the vote.

Shannon is a Certified Fraud Examiner (CFE) whose top priority is stopping government corruption and rooting out fraud, waste and abuse in state government. That is exactly what she has done as McHenry County Auditor, and that’s what she will do as Comptroller. For too long, state government has been run by career politicians connected to the corrupt Madigan Machine. Shannon believes taxpayers deserve a watchdog who will put their interests first, not the special interests and political insiders.

Shannon resides in Crystal Lake with her husband Ross, their two children, Chase and Luke, and their dog Blitzen. Shannon remains active in her community and volunteers in numerous capacities, including Treasurer for her childrens’ schools’ Parent Teacher Organizations, church programs, and coaching recreation baseball and soccer.

Illinois needs an independent fiscal watchdog to hold government leaders accountable. A proven leader with skills and the professional background necessary to make smart financial decisions for state government. What it does not need is yet another Madigan Machine politician looking to make backroom deals, and run a political patronage mill at the expense of the taxpayers.

Shannon’s extensive qualifications include:

  • Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Accounting
  • 15+ years combined of accounting experience in both the public and private sectors
  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA)
  • Certification in Fraud Examination (CFE)
  • Certified Internal Auditor (CIA)
  • Certification in Risk Management Assurance (CRMA)

Rooting Out Corruption

  • Shannon is unafraid to take on entrenched interests. Her audits resulted in the removal of a state elected official for non-compliance. Numerous audits by her office have resulted in criminal investigations, employee terminations and countless process improvements that have helped make McHenry County government an example of good government for other counties.

Streamlined Operations

  • As McHenry County Auditor, Shannon led an effort to modernize and streamline the office, adding in electronic procedures to approve the payment process, saving time and taxpayers dollars for McHenry County.

Ending Wasteful Spending

  • Shannon put an end to wasteful purchases, and ensured that every spending decision goes through a routine audit.
  • Shannon added more financial transparency to county government by implementing automation features to county payment processing and purchasing.

Award Winning Government Service

  • During Shannon’s tenure in McHenry County Government, the County received numerous financial reporting awards from The Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada for achieving the highest standards in government reporting and transparency.

Respected Leader Amongst Her Peers

  • Shannon serves as the President of the Illinois Association of County Auditors. In that role, she led the fight against state government insiders and special interests to limit the oversight authority of locally elected county auditors.
